Junior Year

My junior year of college is complete. As per usual I found it necessary to reflect and debrief what I’ve learned this year. This year I’m writing it differently though, and focusing on something else…and that’s the things that I’ve learned to appreciate this year (and particularly spring semester). So here’s my list.

Things I’ve Learned to Appreciate

-Coming home late at night and going straight to bed
-Coupon cutting
-Holding hands
-Unexpected moments that become favorite memories
-Talking on the phone until 4 in the morning
-Long showers that wash away stress
-Resting on someone’s chest
-Feeling like you belong somewhere
-A good cup of coffee
-Meeting people that happen to change your life
-A good night’s sleep
-Friends who will still play Scrabble with me
-Proclaim
-A refreshing glass of water…”special drinks”
-The words “I love you”
-Roommate bonding
-Good morning texts :)
-All the crazy percussion traditions
-Spontaneous/random letters in the PO
-Sleeping in someone’s arms
-Realizing that things are going to be okay

May

It’s officially May and with May comes graduation season, which I am not looking forward to.  Do you ever notice how really, REALLY difficult it is to say goodbye to people?  Do you ever really know if you’re going to see them again? Are they going to keep in touch? Are they going to make the effort? (Unspoken question being “Are you worth their effort?”….)

But May also symbolizes new beginnings and I can’t say those are all bad.  People are getting ready to go off and try new things and that’s exciting!  People are going to make new friends, and who doesn’t love new friends?? People are going to start their “real” lives!

So where is the middle ground? Where do we fit in a way that allows the happiness but keeps the sadness at bay?

Maybe I’m just mopey because two of my best friends in the entire world are soon to be saying goodbye to me, and I haven’t figured out how to deal with that yet. Or maybe I’m just thinking because next year that’s going to be me. In any scenario, it’s an interesting dichotomy and one that I think is worth considering as we head into graduation season.  Who is going to think you’re worth the effort when they leave? And if they don’t think you’re worth the effort…are they really worth your sadness?
